The chart
— Winckler, M. (2019). L’Ecole des soignant·es. Paris : P.O.L (pp. 145 – 147)
° I, the patient, am your equal. I am choosing you as my healthcare provider.
° You will use your knowledge, your skills, your intelligence and your humanity to provide me with the best physical, moral and emotional care. You will strive, at all times, not to bring me harm.
° You will respect me as a person in all the dimensions of my being – i.e.: my age, gender, origins, social or legal status, culture, values, beliefs, practices and preferences.
° You will be confident and witness to my pleas, fears and hopes which you will never disregard, nor dismiss, nor twist, nor divulge without my consent. You will not use my secrets for your own profit. You will not use them against me. You will not submit me to inquisitive questionings; you will never silence me.
° You will share, without reservation nor brutality, all the information I need to understand what is happening to me, and help me face what could happen. You will answer all my questions with patience, precision, clarity, sinceriy and without any restriction. You will never refuse to answer me or leave me clueless; you will not lie to me. You will not misrepresent your competence and skills.
° You will support my decisions. You will never use threat, blackmail, contempt, manipulation, reproach, guilt, shame or seduction to limit my autonomy. You will never deceive or abuse me and my close ones.
° You will stand beside me when I’m ill and assist me against those who would take advantage of my condition. You will be my defender, my interpreter and my advocate. You will speak on my behalf if I request it, but you will never speak in my place.
° You will respect and implement the laws which protect me; you will fight with me against all the injustice that keep me from receiving healthcare. You will keep yourself informed of the science and the skills that increase health autonomy; you will denounce obscurantism; you will protect me from all profit-seekers.
° You will respect equally all my healthcare providers, and you will work with them, whatever their status, their training, their practice. You will advocate for decent working conditions for them as for yourself.
° You will be protective of your own health. You will rest and take every break that is due to you. You will protect your intellectual autonomy. You will never be for sale.
